Geographic Strategy

State Tiers: Where the Freight Is

Understanding freight quality by region.

Tier 1: Hot Areas

Auto industry hubs with tons of freight and premium rates.

Indiana
Illinois
Michigan
Ohio
Wisconsin
Minnesota

Tier 1-2: Good Freight

Strong freight volumes with consistent opportunities.

Texas
Georgia
N. Carolina
S. Carolina
Pennsylvania
New Jersey
New York
Tennessee
Arkansas

Tier 2: Decent Freight

Moderate freight volume, especially in the Southeast outside Florida.

Mississippi
Alabama
Louisiana
Kentucky
Virginia

Tier 3: Lower Freight

Less freight volume. Bid lower rates, especially leaving these areas.

Florida
Idaho
Utah
Arizona
Colorado
New Mexico
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire
California: standard rates for local loads, but lower eastbound rates because of outbound volume.
Strategic Bidding Tip: If you are in a Tier 3 state heading to a Tier 1 state, you may need to bid slightly lower to secure the load. Loads leaving Tier 1 states can usually command premium rates.
